FOREWORD by the Biased Nihilist |
The Bookie Challenge's official rules may be lengthy and detailed, but they are a necessary evil. Everything a participant needs to know about the competition, from how to correctly post picks to expected conduct on the competition's message board, is located within the official rules provided below. More importantly, because the Bookie Challenge competition has an office pool, the official rules have been meticulousy scripted so as to eliminate any grey areas that could possibly lead to any double standards and to eliminate the possibility of different interpretations of the rules. To that end, the Bookie Challenge has strict procedures when it comes to posting picks. Failure to adhere to those strict procedures can be "costly" in the long run for the members of the competition. Therefore, it is extremely important that everybody in the competition take the time to pore over the official rules and fully understand every aspect of the Bookie Challenge competition. In any event, when the first weekly pointspreads are posted to start a new season of a Bookie Challenge competition, the official rules are considered finalized for that season's competition, to mean they are locked in and no further changes, whatsoever, will be made to the official rules for the remainder of that respective competition. |
OFFICIAL RULES |
SECTION I: MAIN OVERVIEW OF COMPETITION The Nihilist Bookie Challenge competition is a season-long NFL handicapping contest that is conducted on an annual basis through the use of a website and a separate message board. All participants are required to submit a small membership fee ($40) to participate in an annual Bookie Challenge competition, and they must also register a username and password to become a member of the message board so that they can not only place their weekly picks but also interact with other contestants throughout an annual competition. The Bookie Challenge website is used to maintain important information that pertains to an annual competition, such as the releases of weekly pointspreads, weekly picks and results, weekly point standings, and weekly reviews. Additionally, the website also houses historical data of the competition, such as yearly statistical composites for past competitions and handicapping pages for each handicapper that consists of detailed statistics from all past handicapping campaigns. Each week during the entire NFL season, NFL pointspreads will be posted on the website's "Pick 'em" page. Each participant will then be required, on a weekly basis, to post on the competition's message board two best bets, a 3-team parlay selection, and the exact scores of the Thursday night game and the last scheduled game of the week, which during the regular season is always the Monday night game. Points are awarded weekly for each winning best bet (worth one point each), winning 3-team parlay (worth three or six points), and any exact-score hits (worth 5pts, 2pts, or 1pt apiece). Before the start of the first week of the regular season, all participants must also post, along with their weekly sets of picks, who they believe will be the two teams to play in the Super Bowl (worth 5 pts at end of 3rd round of playoffs) and which one of those teams will win the Super Bowl (worth 10 pts at end of contest). Points are accumulated throughout the NFL regular season and playoffs, but the participant with the most points after the end of the competition's playoff rounds will be deemed the overall Bookie Challenge champion. The two participants with the highest point totals at the end of the playoffs will receive the top-two shares from the league's office pool. What's more, the regular season champion at the end of the regular season will also receive a share of the overall office pool, but that share will be the lowest of the three from the overall office pool (Note: Depending on the number of participants in and annual competition, a 3rd-place prize may not be awarded). From the start of the regular season, a single point standings will be utilized until the 8th week of the competition. At the completion of the 8th week, the field within the single point standings will then be seeded into seperate divisions. Starting from week #9, divisional races will take place for the remainder of the regular season. On the week of the Thanksgiving Day holiday, participants will post two full sets of weekly picks, called the Turkey Shoot, which involves posting a full set of weekly picks on Thanksgiving Day and another whole set of weekly picks before the ensuing games on Sunday after Thanksgiving Day. After the regular season is over, the competition will revert back to a single point standings for the NFL playoffs (or for the remainder of the competition). All participants will enter the playoffs with ZERO points. However, when it comes to awarding points for winning selections throughout the FIRST TWO ROUNDS of the playoffs, all participants who won their respective divisions (divisional champions) at the end of the regular season will have substantial scoring advantages over all the participants who finished second in their respective divisions (wild cards*), and over all the remaining participants (at-large participants) from the rest of the entire field who did not finish in first or second place within their divisions. In turn, within the first two rounds of the playoffs, wild-card qualifiers* for the playoffs will have slight scoring advantages over all the at-large participants. For the NFL Conference Championship round (3rd round of playoffs) and the Super Bowl Round (4th and final round of playoffs), all participants will be under the same scoring system. (*Wild Card qualifers: Besides all participants who finished in second place within their respective divisions and qualified for the playoffs as wild cards, the one participant from the remainder of the at-large participants who has the highest point total among them at the end of the regular season will also qualify for the playoffs as a wild-card entrant.) Every Wednesday or Thursday, after the conclusion of every week's handicapping action, a weekly review, which will include a recap of the week's handicapping results, revised point standings, and other weekly segments, will be posted on the Bookie Challenge's website. Back to Table of ContentsSECTION II: AWARDING OF POINTS FOR WEEKLY SELECTIONS A)---On a weekly basis, participants will be required to post two best bets, a 3-team parlay, and the exact scores of the Thursday night game and the last scheduled game of the weekend (which during the regular season will always be the Monday night game). Points will be awarded for any best bet and entire 3-team combination (parlay) that beats the posted NFL pointspreads and for correctly predicting any of the two exact scores on the weekend. Please note, the selection of the two best bets and the three picks within one's parlay combination can consist of selections of a team side (vs the spread) and/or the over/under total of any game. One point will be awarded for each selected best bet that beats the point spread, either three or six points will be awarded for a winning 3-team parlay combination, and five points will be awarded for the correct prediction of any of the two exact score selections (Note: when posting exact scores the winning team of the exact score must be included). As it concerrns the exact scores, a participant can also win 2 pts or 1 pt (see paragraph B below for full details). As to the three or six points awarded for a winning 3-team parlay combination, participants will have an option when selecting their weekly 3-team parlay and whichever combinational choices they select will determine whether they are awarded either three or six points. Participants can choose to incorporate one or both of their two best bets into their 3-team parlay combo, and will be awarded three points if they win a 3-team combination that includes one or both of their best bets. However, six points will be awarded if a participant wins a 3-team parlay that DOES NOT include any of his best bets within his 3-team combination. B)---Points awarded for exact-score selections will be as follows: 5 pts will be awarded for a correct exact score that includes the winning team of the exact score, 2 pts will be awarded for a correct exact-score that does NOT include the winning team of the exact score, and 1 pt will be awarded for a correct exact score that ONLY includes the correct exact score for one of teams selected within a participant's exact-score prediction. C)---For the sake of authenticity, 3-team parlay selections will consist of whole numbers only. Therefore, any pointspreads from the weekly released lines on the "Pick 'em" page that reflect points will be rounded up to the nearest whole number for the utilization within one's 3-team parlay combination. However, when a matchup between two teams involves a pointspread with a -point pointspread (e.g., Dallas -7 vs Green Bay), and that selection is chosen as a parlay pick on one's 3-team combination, any -point lines that fall next to the key NFL scoring combinations of 3 pts, 7 pts, or 10 pts, will, by default, be rounded either up or down to said numbers. For example, for parlay usage only, a straight line of 2 points off the released pointspreads will be rounded to 3 points, 3 points to 3 points, 6 points to 7 points, 7 points to 7 points, 9 points to 10 points, and 10 points to 10 points. However, all other pointspreads of points from weekly natchups that do not fall next to the numbers of 3,7, and 10, will be rounded UP to the next whole number (e.g., 8 points to 9 points). All over/under totals that are released with points on the posted lines will ALWAYS be rounded up to the nearest whole number. As it concerns the pointspreads that have been adjusted to whole numbers for parlay usage, those lines will be placed in parenthesis and placed next to the weekly pointspread lines that reflect -point spreads. An example of a real parlay card is provided below: D)---Any selection within a 3-team parlay combination that ends up tied to the pointspread will result in a loss and will thus void the entire 3-team combination. For a participant to be credited 3 points or 6 points for a winning 3-team parlay, ALL THREE TEAMS (TO INCLUDE ANY OVER/UNDER SELECTIONS) WITHIN THE PARLAY COMBINATION MUST BEAT THE SPREAD!! As it pertains to a best bet ending up tied to the spread, it is neither counted as a win nor a loss. Technically, in gambling terms, a tie to the spread on a single wager is called a "PUSH", and essentially the pick does not count, as if it were never placed. Thus, in the Bookie Challenge competition, whenever a participant has any best bets that wind up tied to the spread, they will not count as neither wins nor losses on a participant's best-bet record. E)---Preseason Super Bowl Selections: When placing their first set of weekly picks at the start of the regular season (week #1), all participants will also be required to predict the two teams who they think will play in the Super Bowl (Super Bowl matchup pick) and which one of those teams will win the Super Bowl game (Super Bowl winner pick). At the end of the NFL Championship round, a participant will be awarded FIVE points for correctly picking the two teams that won in the NFL championship round and that will play in the Super Bowl (TWO points will be awarded if participant only correctly selects ONE team that will play in the Super Bowl). At the end of the Super Bowl game, a participant will be awarded 10 points for correctly picking the team that wins the Super Bowl. In week #1, the preseason selection of the two teams that will play in the Super Bowl and the preseason selection of the eventual Super Bowl winner can be posted separately from a participants' weekly selections, just so long as those preseason selections are posted by the posting deadline for the games played on the Sunday of week #1. IMPORTANT: In the final two rounds of the playoffs, all preseason predictions (Super Bowl matchup and Super Bowl winner) are to be considered as totally separate picks from one's weekly set of picks during the last two rounds of the playoffs, and pointspreads for the teams of any preseason Super Bowl picks will not factor into winning selections of any preseason picks. For example, lets say that in the preseason, a participant had chosen Dallas as one of his Super Bowl matchup picks. Let's also say that Dallas made it to NFC championship game and were tabbed as 4-point favorites over Green Bay, but Dallas eventually wins the game by only two points (thus losing to the pointspread). Since no pointspreads in the final two rounds will affect preseason Super Bowl picks, Dallas will count as a winning preseason pick in the aforementioned scenario. Additionally, all teams chosen within one's preseason picks will not count as hedges in the final two rounds of the playoffs. For example, in the aforementioned scenario (Dallas vs Green Bay), although the participant had chosen Dallas as one of his preseason picks to win in the NFL championship round, that participant is not restricted to choosing Dallas to beat the pointspread within his weekly selection for the NFL championship round. In other words, if he wanted to, the participant can select Green Bay plus the four points, as preseason picks are considered to be totally separate selections within a participant's weekly selections for the last two rounds of the playoffs and are not subject to any hedge violations of the official Bookie Challenge rules. The same stipulations apply to a participant's preseason pick to win the Super Bowl. Back to Table of ContentsSECTION III: GUIDELINES FOR POSTING WEEKLY SELECTIONS A)---Throughout the entire NFL regular season, the kickoff of games for every week will almost always start with a game on Thursday night and conclude with a Monday night game. However, at the end of the regular season and in the first-two rounds of the playoffs, a slate of weekly games will start with several games scheduled on Saturdays. In any event, a consensus line from Vegas will always be posted on the Bookie Challenge's Pick 'em page on Thursday mornings (normally between 8:30 am and 12:00 pm). Once the pointspreads have been posted, participants can then begin to post their weekly picks on the competition's message board, but must post their picks in the proper thread on the message board (which will be labeled weekly as the "Pick 'em thread"). At the latest, all picks must be posted by the deadline for the games being played on Sundays. The deadline for posting all picks is 12:30 pm on every Sunday during the regular season (posting deadlines during the playoffs will vary). At any rate, because some participants may want to choose a Thursday night game or any Saturday games scheduled in the regular season as one of their weekly picks (as either a best bet or a parlay selection), there are several options participants can choose from when it comes to the way they can post their weekly selections that involve the Thursday night game or any Saturday games that are scheduled during the regular season or postseason. Therefore, it is imperative that all participants understand their posting options if they do decide to incorporate a Thursday night game or any Saturday games within their weekly selections. B)---OPTIONS FOR POSTING SELECTIONS OF A THURSDAY NIGHT GAME (to include any Saturday games scheduled in regular season or playoffs): After the weekly pointspreads have been posted on Thursday mornings of the regular season, participants can then begin to post their weekly selections on the competition's message board (must post picks in "Pick 'em" Threads only). Of course, the exact-score pick of a Thursday night game must be posted before the posting deadline on Thursday night (Normally 8 pm). If a participant chooses not to play a Thursday night game as best bets or part of a 3-team parlay, participants can then post their remaining weekly selections (2 best bets, 3-team parlay, and exact-score of Monday night game) at anytime before Sunday's posting deadline (always 12:30 pm). PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT DURING THE REGULAR SEASON, ALL WEEKLY PICKS MUST BE POSTED NO LATER THAN 12:30 PM ON SUNDAYS, TO INCLUDE THE SELECTIONS OF THE MONDAY NIGHT GAME AS A BEST BET AND THE EXACT-SCORE PICK OF A MONDAY NIGHT GAME. As it pertains to other posting options for a Thursday night game, participants can choose Thursday night games as either best bets for the week or as part of their weekly 3-team parlay combination. In the case of choosing a Thursday night game as one or both of their two best bets for the week (a team side and/or the over/under), a participant can choose to only post just one best bet (team side or over/under) before Thursday night's posting deadline and then post his remaining best bet for the week at any time before Sunday's posting deadline. Naturally, if a participant chooses to post both of his two weekly best bets on Thursday night (team side and over/under), then he has exhausted his two best bets for the week. Subsequently, a participant can then post his remaining 3-team parlay and exact score of the Monday night game at any time before Sunday's posting deadline. The above posting options also apply to Saturday games that are scheduled late in the regular season and playoffs. C)---CHOOSING A THURSDAY NIGHT GAME AS PART OF WEEKLY 3-TEAM PARLAY COMBINATION: If a participant decides to select the Thursday night game or any games scheduled on Saturdays during the regular season (or postseason) as one of his parlay selections for the weekend---THE ENTIRE PARLAY COMBINATION (ALL 3 PARLAY SELECTIONS) MUST BE MADE ON THE SAME POST! Always remember that a parlay combination must be posted in its entirety before the posting deadline of the earliest game scheduled within the parlay combination. POSTED PARLAY COMBOS CAN NEVER BE SPLIT UP INTO TWO OR MORE POSTS! Again, all three selections of a parlay combination must always be on the same post. D)---EMERGENCY POSTING OF PICKS: If for any reason participants cannot post their picks before the posting deadlines on Thursday nights, Saturday afternoons, or Sunday afternoons because they are having any type of computer problems, or are having trouble with a web server, or are in an area without internet services, or if the competition's message board is temporarily inaccessible, participants can either e-mail their picks to the Biased Nihilist (Tony), text their picks to the Biased Nihilist (864-344-4678), or (as a last resort) can call in their picks to the Biased Nihilist (864-344-4678). However, keep in mind that the e-mailing of picks, texting of picks, or calling in of picks are subject to the same time constraints for correctly posting picks. To recap, there are only four ways picks can be posted to officially count in the competition: #1) picks can be posted on the competition's message board, #2) picks can be emailed to the Biased Nihilist, #3) picks can be texted to the Biased Nihilist, and #4) picks can be called in to the Biased Nihilist. With that in mind, it behooves participants to keep the following e-mail address and phone number handy just in case a posting emergency should arise: biasednihilist@gmail.com Phone number for Tony (Biased Nihilist): 864-344-4678 Back to Table of ContentsSECTION IV: DISQUALIFICATIONS OF WEEKLY SELECTIONS A)---The Bookie Challenge has strict rules and procedures when it comes to posting picks. Failure to adhere to those strict rules and procedures can result in weekly selections getting disqualified. Therefore, it is imperative that everybody in the competition at least pore over this section of the official rules and fully understand how weekly selections can get disqualified. B)---Any postings of weekly selections that are not posted correctly or are not posted within the specified time constraints listed on the weekly Pick 'em page will be disqualified. However, any disqualified best bets will not be counted as losses on a participant's best-bet record. C)---During the regular season, the posting deadline for participants to post their weekly picks on Sundays will always be 12:30 pm. The posting deadlines for Thursday night games during the regular season will always be 8:00 pm. The posting deadlines for games during the playoffs (with the exception of the Super Bowl) will always be posted within the weekly "Pick 'em" page of the website. In the case of the Super Bowl game, the posting deadline will be before the coin toss of the game. Because there are no time-stamps shown whenever participants make posts on the competition's message board, the exact times that participants post their weekly picks on the weekly Pick 'em threads cannot be precisely validated. The lack of time-stamps can be problematic whenever participants wait until the last minute or seconds before the posting deadlines to make their picks. To remedy this situation, the posting deadlines will be monitored by the competition's administrator(s), and immediately after a posting deadline has passed, a post will be made on the Pick 'em thread to let everybody know in the competition that the posting deadline has passed and that no further posting of picks for the game or games in question will be allowed. D)---Always remember that no further posting of picks will be allowed after the expiration of the 12:30 deadline for games scheduled on Sundays, even if one of your best bets is a Monday night game! Official deadlines for posting selections of games will always be incorporated within the release of the weekly pointspreads on the Pick 'em page of the Bookie Challenge's website. E)---PARLAY SELECTIONS ARE NEVER TO BE SPLIT UP INTO TWO SEPARATE POSTS! If a participant is found to have split up his parlay combination into two separate posts---the entire parlay combination will be disqualified unless they make the proper correction (see paragraph I for details on how to correct weekly picks). However, from the time the pointspreads are released on the Pick 'em page on Thursday mornings and up until the 12:30 posting deadlines on Sundays, best bets can be split up and posted on separate posts. The exact-score of the last game scheduled for the week can also be posted in a separate post. In fact, even an entire parlay combination can be posted on a separate post but only if the ENTIRE parlay (all three selections) is posted in the same post. F)---All weekly selections MUST be posted on the corresponding weekly Pick 'em threads on the competition's message board, or they will be disqualified. Do not post any picks in any other threads on the competition's message board other than the corresponding "Pick 'em thread" for the correct week being handicapped! G)---It is imperative that all participants post their weekly selections in a manner that their picks are absolutely discernable. For instance, use the term "best bets" to indicate your two best bets and "Parlay" to indicate your 3-team parlay combination. There will be a certain amount of leeway allowed for a participant when choosing verbiage to reflect weekly selections at the time of posting picks. However, any set of posted picks that cannot be discerned as being best bets or parlay selections, for example, five picks listed together without any sort of separation or indication of what they are, will result in the disqualification of the entire set of picks unless they are properly corrected (see paragraph I below for details on how to correct weekly picks). Please note that posting the corresponding pointspreads of selected teams or over/under totals are not a requirement when posting picks. Listed below is an ideal example of how weekly picks should be posted:
*(Please note that both teams were listed in this over/under selection. It's best to post both teams when selecting over/under totals so as to avoid any ambiguity) **(Important! Make sure the winning teams of any exact score picks are posted with your exact-score selections, otherwise the exact-score pick(s) could possibly end up being disqualified. See paragraph I below for how to adjust an incorrect exact-score pick). H) Hedging of selections is strictly prohibited, to mean participants cannot select both sides of a single game or both sides of an over/under total. For example, let's say Baltimore is 6 -point favorites over Dallas. Participants cannot select both Dallas and Baltimore as their two best bets for the week in order to lock up a point for the week by picking both sides of the same game. The same goes for picking the opposite side of a best bet in one's parlay combination (whether it be an opposite pick of a team or an opposite pick of an over/under total of the same game). IMPORTANT, on Thanksgiving Day, in the third round of the playoffs, and in the Super Bowl round, be extra careful when selecting the propositional selection of "closest to predicting total combined points of game." The selection of "closest to predicting total combined points of game" cannot be hedged against an over/under selection. For example, if the over/under pointspread for a game is 46 points, and a participant chooses the under 46 total for one of his weekly picks, he cannot pick a "closest to predicting total combined points of game" to go over the total of 46 points. If a participant is ultimately found to have hedged a "closest to predicting total combined points of game" against an over/under selection--ALL PICKS INVOLVED IN THE HEDGED PICKS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED! The only exception in which a hedge against an over/under total will not be disqualified is when a participant's prediction for "closest to predicting total combined points of game" turns out to be the exact over/under pointspread total for said game. I) IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT HEDGED PICKS AND EXACT-SCORE PICKS! An exact-score selection, like preseason Super Bowl selections, are to be considered as wholly separate picks from a participant's weekly set of picks and in no way--whatsoever!--will an exact-score pick factor into any hedges against a participant's weekly set of picks. In other words, an exact-score pick is strictly to be considered as a weekly lottery pick, of sorts, and can be anything a particpant wants it to be. Specifically, even if a participant chose the game of an exact-score pick as one of his weekly set of picks, to mean he chose either a side for the game or an over/under for the game or both, that participant is still free to select an exact-score pick of his choosing, no matter if his exact-score pick reflects the total opposite of his weekly selection(s), or whether that exact-score pick runs contradictory to a best bet of a team, an over/under total, or in the few occasions throughout the season, whether his exact-score pick runs contradictory to the selection of "closest participant to predicting total combined points of game." J)---Once a participant makes his initial selections for a weekly set of picks, under no circumstances is that initial posting of picks to be EDITED for the purposes of altering best bets, switching picks on a parlay combination, or fixing an incorrectly posted parlay combination. Think over your selections thoroughly BEFORE posting your choices. To reiterate, EDITS TO AN INITIAL POST OF PICKS ARE ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED! However, corrections to an initial set of posted picks will be allowed, but corrections will only be allowed to be made on a SUBSEQUENT POST and not on the initial post of picks. In addition, corrections will be limited to a few circumstances, and they are as follows:
Please note: As a courtesy to all participants, the Biased Nihilist (competition's main administrator) and 7mick7 (competition's rules arbitrator) will try as humanly as possible to alert a participant whenever he has made a pick within the message board's weekly Pick 'em thread that may be subject to disqualification. However, it is the sole responsibility of each participant to make sure his weekly picks are correctly posted. K)---Any participant who posts preseason selections for the Super Bowl after 12:30 pm on the opening Sunday of the NFL regular season (week #1) will have his preseason Super Bowl selections in question disqualified. L)---Any posted picks will be disqualified that include games for which no pointspreads have yet been released on the competition's weekly Pick 'em page (see section V, paragraph E for further details). M)---In week #18, any participant found to have violated that week's PUSILLANIMOUS RULE (see section VIII for details) will have any duplicated best bet(s), any duplicated ENTIRE 3-team parlay combination, and any duplicated exact-score pick disqualified. Back to Table of ContentsSECTION V: INTEGRITY OF POSTED POINTSPREADS A)---In order to validate the integrity of the pointspreads used for the competition, a participant can verify that the lines being used have in no way, shape, or form been misrepresented. The pointspread lines can be double checked on the following website: Vegas InsiderB)---The second column of weekly released pointspreads shown on the Vegas Insider site (link provided above) is the "consensus line" column, and it is the column of pointspreads that are exclusively used by the competition. However, please keep in mind, pointspreads for any given week of an NFL season are always fluctuating throughout the week. In any event, the Bookie Challenge competition accesses the weekly pointspreads from the Vegas Insider site on every Thursday morning of the competition, usually between 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon, and those pointspreads are used by the competition to handicap its weekly games. C)---HOW TO VERIFY THE INTEGRITY OF A POSTED POINTSPREAD: Whenever the weekly pointspreads are posted on the weekly Pick 'em thread of the competition's message board, the actual time the pointspreads were accessed from the Vegas Insider website will be included in the initial post of the weekly Pick 'em page of the competition's website. The precise time the pointspreads were accessed from the Vegas Insider site is important because the Vegas Insider site keeps detailed records of each week's line movements for every game. Therefore, a participant can verify that the pointspreads posted on a weekly basis were not misrepresented in any way. To verify a pointspread for a specific game (or all games), a participant must click on the actual pointspread of any game shown on the Vegas Insider's CONSENSUS COLUMN (the second column of pointspreads shown on the Vegas Insider site). Once a participant clicks the actual pointspread of a particular game, a new window will be uploaded and will show all the weekly line movements for the pointspread of the game selected, and more importantly, it will show the actual times the pointspread changed throughout the week for that particular game. D)---Please note, once the pointspreads have been posted on the Pick 'em page, no changes will be made to those posted pointspreads. The only exception in which a change will ever occur is if an egregious error has apparently been made by the Bookie Challenge's main administrator (Biased Nihilist) when he posted the pointspreads on the Pick 'em page (e.g., a 10-pt spread was posted for a game in which a 3-pt spread was the actual pointspread from Vegas). Always remember that any obviously egregious errors on a weekly Pick 'em page will be corrected as soon as they are detected and as soon as possible. E)---If any pointspreads for weekly scheduled games are not available from the Vegas Insider's website at the time of the competition's posting of the weekly pointspreads, they will eventually be added to the weekly Pick 'em page as soon as they are released on the Vegas Insider's CONSENSUS LINE column. A thread alerting participants that a missing pointspread has been finally released will be posted on the competition's message board. In situations in which there are NO SPREADS released for any games at the time the competition posts the weekly spreads on the website's Pick 'em page, participants CANNOT select those games if posting their weekly selections before the missing point spreads have been released on the competition's Pick 'em page. To reiterate, any games without pointspreads CANNOT BE CHOSEN until a spread is made available for those games. Remember, once all picks are posted by a participant, they cannot be changed! So, it is up to the sole discretion of the participant to make the decision to post picks with the knowledge that there are pointspreads yet to be released. At the time of the intial posting of weekly pointspreads on the competition's website, games that presently have no pointspreads available will be indicated by "No Line" on the weekly Pick 'em page. Back to Table of ContentsSECTION VI: DIVISIONAL SEEDING (After completion of week #8) A)---One overall standings of participants will be utilized for the first eight weeks of the regular season. After the completion of the NFL's eighth week, all participants will be seeded into as many divisions as feasibly possible, which will be dependent on the number of total participants in the competition. At a bare minimum, the competition will strive to establish five divisions, with at least three participants within each division. B)---NAMING OF DIVISIONS: Ideally, after the divisional seeding takes place at the conclusion of week #8 of the regular season, the field of participants will be seeded into five separate divisions. As a small tribute to the Biased Nihilist, who created the Bookie Challenge competition and who is the main administrator of the competition, the division he finally gets seeded into will be named the Corozal division by default. The rest of the divisions, by order of precedence, will be named as follows: The Hail Mary division, the Run-&-Shoot division, the Red Zone division, and the Coffin Corner division. C)---The process used for the divisional seeding will be straight forward and the primary seeding determinant will be a participant's overall points' total. In case of deadlocks in total points, the regular season tiebreakers will be used to determine who receives the next best available seed. The first round of seeding will begin by pairing off the Challenge field's number-one overall seed with the field's worst overall seed, which will establish the overall number-one seeded division. The first round of the seeding process will continue in like manner, for example, the second overall seeded participant from the field will get paired with the second-worst overall seeded participant to form the overall number-two seeded division. The first round of the seeding process continues until the five divisions are established. The second round and further rounds of the seeding process will begin by placing the remaining worst seed from the rest of the field into the overall number-one seeded division, the next remaining worst seed from the field into the overall number-two seeded division, and so on until all the divisions are seeded with an equal number of participants. However, if all the divisions cannot be seeded equally, then the procedure in the next paragraph below (Paragraph D) will be utilized for the final round of the seeding process. D)---If there remains a few extra participants to finalize the seeding process, to mean an equal number of participants for each division has been established and there still remains a few participants needed to be seeded, the final round of the seeding process will begin by placing the top-seeded participant from the remainder of extra participants and placing that participant in the number-five overall seeded division (or the lowest overall seeded division). Sequentially, the next highest seeded participant from the remaining group of extra participants will then be placed in the number-four overall seeded division (or the second-worst overall seeded division), and so on until all the extra participants are seeded. E)---In the case that there still remains a deadlock in total points after the regular-season tiebreakers have been exhausted, the participant with the highest seniority within the competition will be awarded the next favorable seed. If there still remains a deadlock in total points after each participant's seniority has been implemented, the competition's main administrator (Biased Nihilist) will determine the next favorable seed by flipping a coin. Back to Table of ContentsSECTION VII: THE TURKEY SHOOT WEEKEND A)---The Thanksgiving Day weekend will require participants to post two sets of weekly picks during the holiday weekend. One set of weekly selections will be made on Thanksgiving day by ONLY utilizing the pointspreads for the three games played on Thanksgiving day. Then another whole set of weekly selections will be made for the remaining games on Sunday and Monday night by ONLY utilizing the pointspreads for the remaining games left on the Thanksgiving weekend. Both sets of weekly picks, to mean those on Thanksgiving Day and those for Sunday's games, will consist of the normal format for weekly selections, which are two best bets, a 3-team parlay, and the exact-score pick of the last game scheduled for the week. However, there will be nine added propositional bets on Thanksgiving day--or better known as the day of the actual Turkey Shoot. In addition, participants will also pick an exact-score selection for the last game played on Thanksgiving Day. To avoid confusion, the pointspreads for Thanksgiving Day will be released on the website's Pick 'em page on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving day, with the pointspreads to be posted late afternoon that day. On Friday morning, the day after Thanksgiving day, the pointspreads will be released for the remaining games scheduled for Sunday and Monday night. B)---FIRST SET OF PICKS (Thanksgiving Day): On Thanksgiving Day, all participants will be required to make two best bets, a 3-team parlay, and the selection of the exact score for the last game scheduled on Thanksgiving Day by utilizing the pointspreads for the three games played on Thanksgiving day and their corresponding over/under totals. In addition, FOR ALL THREE GAMES, all participants will be required to select a combined total of points scored in EACH game, the longest field goal kicked in EACH game (must predict which team will kick the longest field goal and must also predict the actual yardage of kicked field goal), and the longest scoring play in EACH game (must predict team that will make longest scoring play and also exact yardage of longest scoring play). Please note: prediction of longest scoring play excludes field goals and will only consist of an offensive score, a defensive score, or a special-team score. Only the participant (or participants) who comes closest to predicting the winning total of combined points in each of the three games, who comes closest to predicting the longest field goals kicked in each of the three games, and who come closest to predicting the longest scoring play in each of the three games will receive THREE points for each correct propositional pick. Also, additional bonus points will be awarded to the participant (or participants) who correctly predict the exact point total of a game (1 pt bonus), the exact field goal yardage for "longest field goal kicked" in a game (1 pt bonus), and the exact yardage of longest scoring play (5 pt bonus). As usual, best bet winners will be worth one point each, a winning 3-team parlay will be worth the normal 3-pts or 6-pts, and a winning exact-score pick will be worth five points. Provided below are basic examples of how to post a combined total for each game, the prediction of the longest field goal for each game, and the prediction of the longest scoring play of each game: EXAMPLE FOR "CLOSEST TO PREDICTING TOTAL COMBINED POINTS OF GAME": Dall/Balt--57 pts C)---SECOND SET OF PICKS (Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend): All participants will be required to post two best bets, a 3-team parlay, and the exact score of Monday night's game before the start of the earliest game scheduled on Sunday (posting deadline will be 12:30 pm). D)---SCORING FOR THANKSGIVING WEEKEND: All Participants------1 pt for each best bet win SECTION VIII: THE PUSILLANIMOUS RULE (WEEK #18) A)---This is a one-time regular-season rule designed to keep front-runners in the standings from cowardly and shamefully backing into a favorable playoff slot by duplicating selections from other participants who are within close striking distance of overtaking their advantageous playoff qualifications on DOOMSDAY SUNDAY (final weekend of regular season). The Pusillanimous Rule will be in effect only on week #18 of the regular season and will only apply to all divisional leaders, divisional wild cards, and the present qualifier of the Special Wild Card. B)---On the final weekend of the regular season, any participant who is in first or second place within his respective division, to include the participants in the leads for the special wild card and regular-season championship, and who is 18 points or less in FRONT of the nearest participant within his respective division, CANNOT duplicate the best bets, the ENTIRE parlay combination, or the exact-score picks of the nearest participant who respectively trails him in the standings for his favorable playoff qualification (divisional title, divisional wild card, special wild card, and regular-season championship). If it is found that a front-runner posted his selections AFTER his nearest trailing participant and has DUPLICATED the trailing participant's best bets, his EXACT parlay combination, or his exact-score picks, that front-runner will have any of his duplicated pick or picks disqualified. Any disqualified best bets will not count as a loss and will be considered as a "no bet". ENTIRELY duplicated parlay combinations, to mean a front-runner exactly copied all three picks of a trailing participant's parlay combination, will be disqualified. Please note, however, that a front-runner can duplicate one or two parlay picks of a trailing participant's parlay combination, but cannot duplicate the ENTIRE parlay combination. Specifically, a front-runner can duplicate one or two picks from a purser's 3-team combo but can only use them as parlay selections within his own parlay combination and cannot utilize them as best-bet selections from a trailing participant. Additionally, a front-runner cannot duplicate a pursuer's best bets WHATSOEVER, meaning the front-runner cannot use a pursuer's best bet picks as neither best-bet selections nor within his parlay combination. C)---There is one important stipulation about duplicated picks on week #18. If a front-runner posts his picks BEFORE the participant who trails him for his playoff qualification, the Pusillanimous Rule WILL NOT apply. Back to Table of ContentsSECTION IX: REGULAR SEASON TIEBREAKERS (also used for divisional seeding after week #8): Below tiebreakers are used to determine divisional champions, divisional wild cards, special wild card, and Regular Season Champion 1) Most best bet wins SECTION X: PLAYOFF PROCEDURES AND FORMAT A)---The playoff format will consist of four rounds: NFL Wild Card Round, NFL Divisional Round, NFL Championship Round, and NFL Super Bowl Round. B)---A single overall point standings will be utilized in the Bookie Challenge playoffs and ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL ENTER THE PLAYOFFS WITH ZERO POINTS. C)---All participants will be awarded points for winning selections throughout the playoffs based on their playoff statuses as determined by the final regular-season point standings. All participants will be designated one of the following four playoff statuses: divisional champion (all participants who won their respective divisions), divisional wild card (all participants who finished 2nd in their respective divisions), special wild card (participant with the highest point total among all participants who did not win a divisional title and did not finish in second place in his respective division), and at-large participant (all remaining participants who did not win a divisional championship, a divisional wild card, or failed to qualify as the special wild card). D)---During the first two rounds of the playoffs, scoring advantages will be awarded depending on a participant's playoff qualification (see "SECTION XI: PLAYOFF SCORING" for the exact points awarded for the first-two rounds of the postseason). After the first two rounds, all participants will be under the same scoring system. E)---All points awarded for selecting a winning 3-team parlay will be scored in the same manner as was scored during the regular season. Three points will be awarded for a winning 3-team parlay that contains one or more best bets within the parlay combination. Six points will be awarded for a winning 3-team parlay that does not consist of any best bets. F)---For the first round of the playoffs (NFL wild card round), there will be pointspreads released consisting of 6 games and 6 corresponding over/under totals for each game. All participants must choose five best bets and the exact score of the last game played in the round, but only divisional champs, divisional wild cards, and the special wild card will be able to select parlay combinations. G)---For the second round of the playoffs (NFL Divisional round), there will pointspreads released consisting of 4 games and 4 corresponding over/under totals for each game. Again, all participants must choose five best bets and the exact score of the last game played in the round. However, for the second round of the postseason, all participants, regardless of their playoff qualifications, will be eligible to select parlay combinations. H)---For the third round of the playoffs (NFL Championship Round) there will be pointspreads released consisting of 2 games and their corresponding over/under totals. All participants must choose 2 best bets, a 3-team parlay, and the exact score of the last game played in the round. In addition, for both games of the NFL Championship round, all participants must select the combined total of points scored for each game, must predict which teams will kick the longest field goals in each game (must select team and exact yardage of FG), and must also select which teams will have the longest scoring plays in each game (must select team and exact yardage of longest scoring plays. Longest scoring plays excludes field goals). However, only participants who come closest to predicting the final combined score of each game, who come closest to predicting the longest field goal kicked in each game (team and yardage must be selected), and who come closest to predicting longest scoring plays in each game (team and yardage must be selected) will win propositional points (3 pts for each correct pick). Additionally, bonus points will be awarded to participants who predict any of the three propositional selections exactly right: 1-pt bonus for predicting exact total of combined points scored; 1-pt bonus for predicting exact yardage of longest field goal (must have correct team kicking FG), and 5-pt bonus for predicting exact yardage of longest scoring play (must have correct team of longest scoring play). I)---The pointspreads to be released for the NFL Super Bowl Round will consist of one game and its corresponding over/under total. There will be 12 overall selections for the Super Bowl round and participants are required to choose every selection. However, participants can only choose one selection from selection #12 (Super Bowl MVP--must choose 12A, 12B, or 12C) Back to Table of ContentsSECTION XI: PLAYOFF SCORING A)---NFL WILD CARD ROUND (Round One): All participants must select 5 best bets and the exact score of the last game played in the round. Only Divisional Champions, Divisional Wild Cards, and the Special Wild Card can choose a 3-team parlay. Regular-season Champion--3 pts for each best bet win---3 pts or 6 pts for 3-team parlay winner B)---NFL DIVISIONAL ROUND (Round Two): All participants must select 5 best bets and the exact score of the last game played in the round. All participants are eligible to select 3-team parlay combinations. Divisional Champions----3 pts for each best bet win---3 pts or 6 pts for 3-team parlay winner C)---NFL CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND (Round Three): All participants must pick 2 best bets, a 3-team parlay, the total combined points scored in each game, the longest Field Goal in each game (must pick team and yardage of FG), the longest scoring play in each game (must pick team and yardage of longest scoring play), and the exact score of the last game played in the round. All Participants-------3 pts for each best bet win-----3 pts for a 3-team parlay winner D)---NFL SUPER BOWL ROUND (Round Four): There are 12 overall selections to choose from in the Super Bowl round. It is mandatory for all participants to post picks for every selection (can only choose one pick for selection #12 Super Bowl MVP--choose 12A, 12B, or 12C). #1) 4 pts.......Super Bowl point spread winner Bonus Points (10 pts).....Preseason Pick of Super Bowl Winner (straight up, no pointspread involved) Back to Table of ContentsSECTION XII: PLAYOFF TIEBREAKERS (OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND GOLD-PRESSED LATINUM WINNER) A)---The overall Bookie Challenge Championship will be determined by the participant who accrues the most points throughout the NFL playoffs. In case of participants being tied in the most total points at the end of the playoffs, the following tiebreakers are to determine the Booke Challenge Champion (Note: These same tiebreakers will be used to determine the two winners among those participants who are in the league's Gold-Pressed Latinum Club): 1) Most overall points from Regular Season* *IMPORTANT! The regular-season champion, no matter if he won the regular-season championship by virtue of a tiebreaker, AUTOMATICALLY WINS ALL TIEBREAKER SITUATIONS IN THE POSTSEASON, TO INCLUDE TIEBREAKERS FOR THE LATINUM JACKPOT! This tiebreaker stipulation only applies to any ties in total points that involve the regular-season champion. However, should a tie in total points between participants arise in the playoffs that does not involve the regular-season champion, the tiebreakers listed above will determine the tiebreak. Back to Table of ContentsSECTION XIII: GOLD-PRESSED LATINUM CLUB (OFFICE POOL) A)---Tony Callura (the Biased Nihilist and main administrator of competition) and his wife, Eileen Callura, will serve as the co-treasurers of the Bookie Challenge competition. All participants are required to submit membership fees (antes) to participate in an annual Bookie Challenge competition. The annual membership fee is $40 (referred to as Latinum bars on the competition's message board). The fee is to be forwarded to our competition's main treasurer, Eileen Callura, of whom will hold membership fees until winners of the Gold-Pressed Latinum jackpot are determined. There will be three prizes awarded from the final overall jackpot. However, the exact amounts of those prizes will not be officially determined until all membership fees are received, which can take as long as the 10th week of a regular season before the final amount of a Latinum jackpot is officially known. In any event, the Bookie Challenge competition will award three annual prizes, with the first-place prize to be awarded to the overall Bookie Challenge champion, the second-place prize to be awarded to the runner up to the overall Bookie Challenge champion, and a third-place prize to be awarded to the regular-season champion. Please click on the below link (will open in new window) to view the amounts for the three prizes to be awarded from a given season's overall jackpot. The three awarded prizes will be based on the final number of members that will participate for an annual competition: PAY SCALE FOR BOOKIE CHALLENGE PRIZESThe participant who has the highest point total after the four playoff rounds will win the first-place prize of the Latinum jackpot, and the participant who has the second-highest point total after the four playoff rounds will win the second-place prize. The participant who wins the regular-season championship will win the third-place prize (if applicable). In case participants end up deadlocked in total points for any of the three prizes, the playoff tiebreakers will be used to determine the official winners of the first-place and second-place prize winners, while the regular-season tiebreakers will be used to determine the official winner of the third-place prize (if applicable). B)---DEADLINE FOR SENDING IN $40 MEMBERSHIP FEE: All participants must either send a PayPal payment or MAIL their membership fees to the competition's treasurer, Eileen, no later than the Wednesday of week #9 of the NFL regular season. We take commitments to participate in the Bookie Challenge competition, and by extension, its office pool (or Gold-Pressed Latinum Club) very seriously. With that said, if the competition's treasurer DOES NOT RECEIVE a participant's membership fee by the end of business day on the Thursday of week #10, the participant will be temporarily suspended from posting any picks in the competition until his membership fee is received by the competition's treasurer. In addition, any members who had committed themselves to participate in the Bookie Challenge competition and who quits the competition because of suspension for failure to forward their fees in time, will be subject to a lifetime ban from the competition. There will be no exceptions to temporary suspensions doled out because of unreceived membership fees. As a courtesy, reminders to mail in membership fees will be posted on the weekly "Pick 'em" threads prior to the approaching deadline to mail in membership fees. C)---RECEIPT OF LATINUM JACKPOT: Eileen Callura (competition's main treasurer) will hold all received membership fees and will accordingly send out the shares of the Latinum jackpot to the winners within two days after they have won the prizes. In the cases of the first-place prize winner (overall Bookie Challenge champion) and second-place prize winner (runner up to overall champion), the respective Latinum prizes will be sent within two days after the Super Bowl has been played. In the case of the third-place prize winner (regular-season champion), the Latinum prize will be sent within two days after the last Sunday of the regular season (if applicable). D)---METHOD OF PAYMENTS FOR COMPETITION'S MEMBERSHIP FEES: There are four methods of payments for membership fees that are accepted by the competition and they are as follows: by PayPal, cash, money order, or personal check. Regardless of the method chosen, it is IMPERATIVE that members who send PayPal payments to also send Tony Callura (competition's main administrator) their username they use in the competition, along with their real name, their mailing address (if applicable), and their current email address. When making a PayPal payment send any of the aforementioned information to the following email address: biasednihilist@gmail.com. For those participants who do have PayPal accounts and do plan to submit membership fees through PayPal, Eileen's PayPal information is being provided below so that PayPal payments can be sent: Eileen Callura's PayPal information: eileencallura@yahoo.com Sending a PayPal payment is the preferred method of payment. For those who do send PayPal payments, they will receive any prizes won from the overall Latinum jackpot a lot faster through a PayPal payment. For those who decide to mail in their membership fees, they can choose to send cash, a money order, or a personal check. For those not submitting their fees through PayPal, the mailing address to send in membership fees is as follows (Please note: if not mailing in cash, please make any checks or money orders payable to EILEEN CALLURA): For those who do decide to mail in their membership fees, and in the case that anyone who mails in his/her fee wins one of the prizes from the Latinum jackpot, they will be sent a check from Eileen within two days after winning said prize(s). IMPORTANT! An exclusive thread will be started on the competition's message board in which the Biased Nihilist will keep everybody abreast of the membership fees received after each fee has been sent in. Back to Table of ContentsSECTION XIV: CLARIFICATIONS OF TIE-BREAKER TERMS (WINS WITHIN PARLAYS, PERFECTAS, GOOSE EGGS, ETC.) A)---Tiebreakers can play a pivotal role in the Bookie Challenge competition. Some of the tiebreakers, such as Wins within Parlays, Weeks Won, Perfectas, Goose Eggs, and Golden Goose Eggs are unique terms used by the Bookie Challenge competition. It is highly recommended that all participants know what each of the tiebreakers stand for. So please take the time to get familiarized with the tiebreakers listed below. B)---WINS WITHIN PARLAYS is the total amount of winning picks a participant has accrued within his combined parlay combinations during the regular season and playoffs. C)---A WEEK WON is a weekend in which a participant finishes with the HIGHEST point total for the weekend. Should there be any ties for the highest point-total on any given weekend, no participant will be credited for a WEEK WON. D)---A PERFECTA is a weekend in which a participant wins BOTH of his best bets and a 3-team parlay combination that DOES NOT include any of the participant's selected best bets within his parlay combination. Therefore, a PERFECTA will not be awarded if a participant ties to the pointspread on one of his best bets, as a participant must win all his selections (2 best bets and ENTIRE 3-team parlay) to be credited with a PERFECTA. An exact-score pick is not factored into a PERFECTA weekend. E)---A GOOSE EGG is a weekend in which a participant fails to score any points, but does not lose every pick selected. For example, a participant could have pushed on one of his best bets, lost his other best bet, and lost his parlay, and as a result did not win any points. However, his "push" is not counted as a loss on his best-bet record, so he did not technically lose all of his picks for the weekend. Please note, if a participant hits an exact-score pick or propositional selection it will void a GOOSE EGG weekend. F)---A GOLDEN GOOSE EGG is a weekend in which a participant fails to score any points, but does so by losing BOTH of his best bets and his ENTIRE 3-team parlay that DOES NOT include any best bets within the parlay combination. Please note, if a participant hits an exact-score pick or propositional selection it will void a GOLDEN GOOSE EGG weekend. Back to Table of ContentsSECTION XV: MESSAGE BOARD GUIDELINES (EXPECTED CONDUCT ON FORUM AND BANS FROM COMPETITION) A)---ABOUT THE MESSAGE BOARD: The competition's message board is a separate domain that is connected to the competition's website, and is an important feature of the competition because it allows participants to post their weekly selections and to interact with one another during annual competitions. The message board can be accessed from the main home page of the competition's website (nihilistbookiechallenge.com). In addition, because the competition's message board must be utilized every week in order for each participant to post his weekly picks, it is highly recommended that each participant bookmark the site of the message board (https://biasednihilist13.discussion.community). B)---NAVIGATING THE MESSAGE BOARD: To access the message board, a participant must first register into the site (link to message-board site is provided at the very end of the above paragraph). If for some reason a veteran participant has forgotten his username and/or password, and cannot sign into the message board, please immediatly email the Biased Nihilist (biasednihilist@gmail.com) or phone him (864-344-4678) so that the problem can be fixed. In any event, once a participant has signed in, he will be directed to the "Categories page" of the forum. Presently, the forum has two separate message boards, one of the message boards is the New York Yankees forum and the other is the Bookie Challenge forum. Participants of the Bookie Challenge competition need to click on the "Bookie Challenge Competition Message Board" to not only access the competition's message board but also to be able to participate in the competition, and more importantly, so that they can post their weekly set of picks. C)---EXPECTED CONDUCT ON MESSAGE BOARD AND BANS FROM COMPETITION: Because the message board is separate from the actual Bookie Challenge website and has its own terms of service agreement, the posting of any pornographic images is strictly prohibited. As it concerns participants posting on the competition's message board, it is expected that all participants conduct themselves in a mature and amicable manner. With that being said, whenever a competition involves individuals who are highly competitive, some smack talking is almost always inevitable. The same applies to the Bookie Challenge competition. Unfortunately, we all know how animosities can manifest between posters on public forums, which is just a reality that will rear its ugly head no matter how hard administrators try to eliminate the discord. However, we are asking, if not pleading, that whatever animosities or differences anyone may develop against another participant, whether they be over political, religious, or ideological issues, we ask that each participant, whenever posting within the Bookie Challenge threads, put aside any deep-rooted contempt they may harbor for another participant and refrain from any personally vicious attacks against another participant. Remember, smack talking about football and handicapped picks are always welcomed in the Bookie Challenge competition, hell, almost encouraged just for the purposes of cutting up, but maliciously personal attacks are not welcomed and won't be tolerated. Never forget, we're all in the competition because we love the NFL and enjoy handicapping its games, so let's have fun doing it by respecting one another and acting like grown adults. In any event, should a participant be found to be genuinely and purposefully rude toward another participant--or regularly and blatantly insults another participant--the participant or participants responsible for slinging the personal insults will be warned ONLY one time to cool it. If that doesn't stop the rogue behavior, then the participant(s) involved in the discord will be subjected to a participation review by the Bookie Challenge administrators (two cadre members) to determine whether to expell that participant from the competition (Note: Any banned member will not be refunded his $40 ante--so behave yourselves!). D) Participants can also be permanently banned from the competition if they abruptly quit the competition in a single campaign or habitually quit the competition over the span of several years. In addition, participants can be banned for failure to forward their membership fees (antes) during a Bookie Challenge competition. Back to Table of Contents |
